Another milestone achieved for Nordhavn

A third Nordhavn has rounded Cape Horn, widely regarded as one of the great challenges of yachting. Earlier this week N63 Ithaka rounded the infamous southern tip of Chile, aka “the sailors graveyard” due to its hazardous conditions, strong currents and winds. Despite facing rough conditions, owners Ann and Andy Evans accomplished the incredible feat in safety and comfort: afterward they doubled back making their way to Puerto Williams facing 35-40 knot winds head on. “We are so happy with the 63 handles in wind and waves,” Ann wrote to Jim Leishman, vice president of PAE.

Leishman was on board Nordhavn 46 Egret when it became the first Nordhavn to round the Horn in January 2007. Less than a month later, Nordhavn 57 Ice Dancer followed the feat by conquering Cape Horn. Both boats also doubled the Horn by reversing their route after completing their first pass around it.

“What Ann and Andy have accomplished puts them in an elite group,” said Leishman, who has predicted the area is destined to grow in popularity as a desired cruising ground “for those inclined and equipped with the right vessel.”
